English (ئینگلیزی)
Taqi al-Din Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim, famously known as Ibn Taymiyyah, was an immensely influential, prolific, and complex Islamic scholar, theologian, jurisconsult (mufti), and logician. Living during the Mamluk sultanate in the 7th and 8th centuries AH, his intellectual and jurisprudential contributions remain pivotal, continuously shaping contemporary Islamic thought, theology, and political discourse across the globe.
Early Life, Migration, and Academic Foundation:
Ibn Taymiyyah was born in 1263 CE (661 AH) in the ancient city of Harran (located in modern-day southeastern Turkey). Due to the devastating Mongol invasions of the region during his childhood, his family fled seeking refuge in Damascus, Syria. Raised in a highly distinguished family of Hanbali scholars—his father and grandfather being renowned jurists—he demonstrated exceptional intellectual capacity at an early age. He rapidly mastered traditional Islamic sciences, including Quranic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith studies, jurisprudence (fiqh), Arabic lexicography, and comparative philosophy.
Historical Context and Socio-Political Activism:
Ibn Taymiyyah's era was defined by deep political instability and existential threats to the Muslim world, characterized by the ongoing conflicts with the Mongol Ilkhanate. Far from being an isolated academic, he actively engaged in public affairs. He delivered fiery speeches to boost civilian morale, participated in diplomatic missions to negotiate with Mongol rulers, and stood on the front lines alongside Mamluk forces during the historic Battle of Shaqhab (Marj al-Saffar) to defend Damascus.
Theological Methodologies and Criticisms:
Intellectually, Ibn Taymiyyah championed a return to the foundational textual sources of Islam (the Quran and Sunnah) as understood by the earliest generations (the Salaf). He launched extensive philosophical critiques against Hellenistic speculative philosophy, scholastic theology (Kalam), and certain esoteric Sufi practices, viewing them as foreign innovations (bid'ah) distorting orthodox faith. His rigid, non-conformist stances frequently brought him into direct confrontation with contemporary scholars and Mamluk authorities. Consequently, he spent multiple periods imprisoned in Cairo and Damascus, ultimately passing away inside the Citadel of Damascus in 1328 CE.
Prolific Works and Intellectual Legacy:
Ibn Taymiyyah left behind a monumental corpus of writings spanning hundreds of volumes, preserved and systematically disseminated by his premier disciple, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. His masterworks are celebrated for their encyclopedic scope, rigorous critical method, and profound depth. Key notable bibliography includes:
Majmu al-Fatawa (The Compendium of Fatawa): A massive multi-volume collection addressing diverse issues of theology, ethics, and jurisprudence.
Dar' Ta'arud al-Aql wa-l-Naql (Refutation of the Contradiction Between Reason and Revelation): A profound philosophical treatise asserting that sound human reason inherently harmonizes with authentic divine revelation.
Minhaj as-Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah (The Pathway of the Prophetic Tradition): A monumental polemical work providing an extensive critique of alternative sectarian theological frameworks.
Al-Siyasah al-Shari'yyah (Governance According to Islamic Law): A fundamental text outlining theories of political administration, justice, and statecraft in Islamic law.
